Doug Nowlin's - 6th cousin 5 times removed on his father's side of the fam ily.


He worked as a merchant, a highway surveyor, a market clerk, town clerk, t own treasurer, a member of the school committee, a business executive a nd a member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives from 1835- 1837 and in 1843.

He was a member of the Massachusetts state senate from 1840-1842.

Abbott was elected as a Whig to the United States Congress, serving from M arch 4, 1843-March 3, 1849.

Following his term in Congress, he served as the postmaster in Andover, wh ere he died.
