He was the Master of a sailing vessel out of Nantucket and during the Revolutionary War was engaged in running the British blockade. He and his two oldest sons, Timothy and Francis were all taken prisoner when their ship was captured in 1780. They said they were lost at sea but in fact they were kep aboard the British Ship Jersey and died of Starvation, neglect, and disease.
