Jack Peyton Kane, Sr.
June 13, 1902(?)
Half brother of:

Clarence P. Kane, older half brother of my Dad, Jack Peyton Kane,
Jack, my father, also used his middle name, (Peyton) believed family moved to Alameda, from San Francisco, after the1906 Earthquake. I think the family moved to a house, on Regent street, Alameda. Jack attended school, in Alameda, until WW1, when he enlisted in the Army. (was under age). Years ago, about 1930, my father and mother would visit his grand-mother, who lived at 1415 Willow Street, Alameda. She lived in a cottage next to a larger house, occupied by relatives. She was almost 100 years old. I would guess she was from the Peyton side of the family (they also mentioned Jack Harbold, Peyton and DeComoneil (an Ambassador).among relations

Half brother, Clarence, was Editor of the Alameda Times Star newspaper, Alameda. Probably lived with mother Amy Peyton and Jack, my father, along with Ellsworth, (an older half brother of my Dad) until Clarence went into the Balloon branch of the Army..to Alameda, after the 1906 earthquake. Clarence was one of the first balloonists. Jack enlisted in Army, WW1, and was surprised to run into Clarence at Kelly Field, Texas (he did not know Clarence was in Texas). Clarence had enlisted before Jack and was already in Texas, in the Balloon Corps,

I remember going to the Presidio, San Francisco, with my parents, to pick up Clarence s son, who was in the service (possibly during the 30s). We went to dinner and drove around town. I think his son was at the Presidio, SF for a short time, taking special training before possible appointment to West Point. Strange, years later, Clarence met Peyton Kane,Jr., Jacks son, at Fort Dix, New York, (1946, when Peyton returned from Europe (WW11). Clarence was a General by that time. He personally met me when ship docked. Peyton Jr., had enlisted in the Air force pilot program and was returning from Europe, 101st Airborne, as flyer. The next time I saw Clarence was in the 1950s. Our family visited him at his avocado ranch near Riverside, California, and he had retired from the Air Force. He was a great guy, reflected authority but was unassuming.

I recall that my Dad attended his funeral, in Southern California, in the early 70s.

At the end of WW11, in Europe, Clarence was in charge of supplies and occupied Field Marshall Rommels Headquarters (captured from the Germans) near Cannes, France. I had an invitation to drop in, from General Kane, as I was staying in Nice, a few miles away from Cannes, but couldnt make the trip before he left France.

Jack Kane, my father returned to Oakland, CA, after discharge. He met my mother, Bernice, and married in Santa Clara, California, in 1923. He attended college at the Southern Branch of University of California, for a time, he and my mother, Bernice, lived in Glendale, Ca for a short time until they returned to the Bay Area. He was mostly self employed as a Commercial artist and had offices in the Tribune Tower. He took a position as Advertising Manager of Safeway Stores, Bay Area, then a small grocery chain, during the early 30s. He rapidly advanced while Safeway mushroomed, and was promoted to Northern California Adv. Mgr., and later, National Adv. Mgr. for Safeway, United Sates and Canada. In the early 40s, Jack later originated and headed Essex Advertising, a division of Safeway, with offices in the Russ Bldg., San Francisco. He also continued his interest in art and developed a syndicated weekly feature, Mikeographies with a charcoal drawing of many radio personalities along with their biography. It was featured weekly in hundreds of newspapers including SF Chronicle. Jack left Safeway Stores when he became a Vice President of a large New York Advertising Agency. However; he returned to the Bay Area after he tired of commuting between New York and the Bay Area and was advertising Manager with S & W Foods, a high end canned food producer. In the 60s, Jack and his sons, Peyton and Weston, purchased the Gillick Press, an established Berkeley specialty printing company and developed the first Hallmark Card retail store. Later they had similar stores in San Mateo, Berkeley and Walnut Creek. Jack went into semi retirement in the seventies and the family sold the downtown property to University of California. Peyton and Wes later owned a small shopping center in downtown San Leandro and operated both retail and wholesale businesses (Allied Press, wedding invitations, Kringle Card Co., retail/wholesale Christmas card mfg).Jack took an active part in the business and worked until he died in 1982. Mother, Bernice, was active and continued to live in Alameda Southshore Beach & Tennis Club with her two dogs, Keno and Domino, until her death in 1987.
